A Wedding Here is A Sacred Event

We are delighted to share information with you about wedding policies here at UCC, and to assist you in any way we can in making plans for your wedding. This statement has been prepared to answer many of your questions, some of which are foremost in your mind, and many others, which may not have occurred to you.

Weddings can be held in any setting, but the choice of the Sanctuary or Chapel as the site for your wedding has some distinct implications. We at University Christian Church, consider the ceremony to be a sacred event where the bride and groom pledge themselves to one another in the presence of God.

Our policies about weddings emerge from this conviction. They apply whether or not the participants are members of the congregation. They also apply to large events attended by many persons, or a small event attended only by members of the immediate family.

The wedding introduction usually says, "We are gathered here in the presence of God..." and this fact determines our wedding policies.

Weddings and Special Events Coordinator

Our church provides the services of a trained and competent wedding coordinator to assist with wedding plans and arrangements inside the church. Your contact with the church will be through our wedding coordinator.

Pam can be reached at

817.926.6631 ext.123.

Pam will provide guidance in all aspects of your wedding. She will assist at your rehearsal and wedding. Because we provide these services, bridal consultants are used only for other plans such as florist, photographers, and events outside the church.

Scheduling Your Wedding

Setting the Date

You will want to plan as early as possible, so that the use of the church facilities can be arranged without conflict. The date of the wedding is set in consultation with the church wedding coordinator, who will clear the date with one of the ministers and the church schedule. In order to secure needed facilities, you must return the Request Form within two weeks of receiving it, with your deposit. A tentative reservation of a requested date is made at your first inquiry. The tentative reservation is held for two weeks, at which time you must return the Request Form with your deposit. The deposit is refundable up to 90 days before the wedding and/or before any meetings are held with the minister, organist or wedding coordinator.

Wedding Service

Weddings may be held in the Sanctuary, (1,200 seats, including the balcony), or in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd, (100 seats, including the balcony). A UCC staff minister will be the officiating minister in your marriage ceremony.

Rehearsal

Frequently, more than one rehearsal is held on a Friday evening, therefore, it is important that the time indicated for the rehearsal, (limited to one hour), be observed. If your participants arrive late, a full rehearsal may not always be possible. Please inform your wedding party of the importance of being on time for the rehearsal.
Fees

A detailed schedule of fees is available from the church wedding coordinator. A $200 deposit is required at the time a wedding is scheduled. The balance of fees is due one month prior to the wedding. Payment may be made by check or credit card. Checks are to be made payable to University Christian Church, and sent to the attention of the church wedding coordinator. Credit card payment may be made in person, or by phone.

The Wedding Party
It is expected that members of the wedding party will recognize the fact that the church is the house of God, and will conduct themselves at all times in a manner acceptable to a place of worship. No alcoholic beverages or illegal substances are permitted on the church premises at any time, nor are they permitted in the dressing rooms before the ceremony. The wedding rehearsal or wedding will not be performed if any member of the wedding party is under the influence of alcohol or illegal substances. Smoking is not permitted in the church. The use of rice, birdseed, or flower petals is not permitted inside or outside the church due to liabilities.

It is the obligation of the bride and groom to make certain that these rules are made known tho the members of the wedding party.

Dressing Rooms

The bride and groom's parties may dress at the church. It is the responsibility of the bride and groom to arrange for the care of the property of the wedding party before, during, and after the wedding, and for the removal of such items immediately following the service. Any rooms used may be locked, but the church is not responsible for anything lost or stolen.

Officiating Ministers and Conferences
We do require that one of our staff ministers officiate all weddings held here. The Church Wedding Coordinator will notify you as to which of our ministers will conduct your ceremony. Our wedding ceremonies are traditional, sacred services in accordance with the traditions and beliefs of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Non-members of University Christian Church should recognize that the ceremony must reflect patterns followed  by the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) wedding traditions. In order for one of our ministers to conduct the wedding rehearsal and ceremony, conferences must be held with the bride, groom, and minister at least three months prior to the wedding. Details of the wedding itself will be discussed, as well as implications of commitments made in the marriage ceremony. Responsibility of scheduling these conferences rests with the bride and groom. The minister will not proceed with the wedding unless the conferences have been held.
