-1->Commitment and Missions
The members of University Christian Church have a strong and long standing commitment to children and their families. While the primary responsibility for spiritual development lies with parents, UCC is a significant partner for families as they grow in faith toward God. Nurturing faith happens at UCC through several nationally recognized programs offered by a host of well-trained staff and volunteers. The programs encourage multi-dimensional, experiential learning. Our hope is that each child who comes through the doors at University Christian Church will not only learn about the Christian faith, but also experience the loving presence of God.
Children’s Charter
In Foundation Partnership with Disciples Home Missions, University Christian Church makes this covenant with children:
As the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) we are called to nurture and minister to children. We are called to:
|
Love, shelter, protect, and defend all children, especially those who are abused, neglected, disabled, or in danger.
Nurture and support families in caring for their children.
Advocate for the dignity of all children at every level of our religious, civic, and political lives.
Receive, nurture, and treasure each child as a gift from God.
Proclaim the Gospel to children in ways that encourage them to receive and respond to God’s love.
Give highest priority to the planning, leader preparation, financial support, space requirements and quality of materials for children’s programs.
Help the children become the Good News. |
As the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) we are called to receive the ministry of children. We are called to:
|
Advocate for the integrity of childhood.
Receive the unique gifts of children as signs of God’s rule listen to the prophetic voices of children and provide opportunities for their voices to be heard in the life of the faith community.
Value the participation of children in the social life and governance of our faith communities and other outreach efforts.
Provide opportunities for children to lead in mission work of the church through KIDS to KIDS and other outreach efforts.
Hear the Good News that children have to share. |
As the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) we are called to minister with children. We are called to:
|
Foster community beyond the family unit in which children, youth and adults know each other by name, minister to each other, and are partners together in serving Christ from “our doorsteps to the ends of the earth.”
Take our place alongside children to do Christ’s work of reconciliation, compassion, unity and justice.
Appreciate and accept children’s abilities and readiness to represent Christ and His church.
Study the Bible, pray and worship with children. |
A copy of this charter was presented to University Christian Church on October 22, 2000, by the Disciples Care for Children division of Disciples Home Missions (formerly Homeland Ministries), based in Indianapolis, Indiana.
